A step-by-step guide on how to record a two-person podcast with one iPhone horizontally

Updated over a month ago

Let's get you set up and ready to record your podcast episode!

Step 1: Set up Your iPhone

Place your iPhone onto a tripod with the rear camera facing you and your guest, open Detail and start a new project so that you can see the shot.

When recording your video podcast with one iPhone there are 3 important things to be aware of:

Framing – who is in the frame and how much space is around them
Angle - how wide the shot is for cropping in later, as well as whether the shot is facing the speakers dead on or from the side.
Lighting - the lighter the better!

Framing & Lighting tips

  • Frame it straight on, with less empty space above. You want just enough of their body to make it feel natural, here are some examples

  • Go wider than you think you need – this will give you room to zoom in without pixelating the quality – especially important for converting into vertical short clips later.

  • Lighting is key to improving the quality of the picture, so either place you and your guest in front of a really bright natural lighting, or use spotlights and backlights to light them up and create ambience behind and around them

☝️ Make sure your iPhone is fully charged before you record your podcast. Or use a tripod with a magsafe charger to keep your phone charged.

Step 2: Plug in your audio

If the room you're recording in is pretty quiet, your iPhone's built-in microphone should do a pretty good job at capturing the sound. But we recommend, for two people, to invest in a set of wireless microphones.

Wireless microphone options

  • Boya BY-B2 – these are simple, budget-friendly options that give a fairly good quality sound. You'll plug the receiver into the iPhone, and each person will get a clip on mic.

  • Hollyland Lark M2 – a little more expensive than the Boya with better sound.

  • RODE WIRELESS GO II - great quality if you're willing to invest a bit more.

Step 3: Take a set & do a test

We always recommend doing a quick test to make sure you're happy with the framing and the audio quality.

Hit record and talk for 10 seconds, then come back, unplug the microphone receiver to listen and watch your test back.

Step 3: Hit record

When you're happy with the test, hit the big pink record button and the app will start recording. When you're done, come back
